Barnett Congratulates Abbott as Leader - A New Start

Tuesday, 1 December 2009

Liberal Senator Guy Barnett has congratulated Tony Abbott on his appointment today as the new Federal Leader of the Liberal Party saying he will take the fight up to Labor in advance of the next election.

“This is a new day for the Liberal Party,” Senator Barnett said.

“Tony Abbott is capable, articulate and determined. He is a conviction politician.

“The Liberals are committed to providing a credible alternative Government and a real contest at the next election.

“I look forward to working with Tony Abbott as leader and Julie Bishop as deputy.

“The Liberal party is committed to action on climate change, but not without proper consideration of the impacts on Australian jobs and families.

“I support action on climate change and a price on carbon – but not the way Kevin Rudd is proposing.

“The Government’s ETS is flawed because of its timing and design.   It should be referred to a Senate Committee for proper scrutiny, or voted down.

“There is clearly concern in the community about Kevin Rudd’s ETS.

“I would also like to acknowledge Malcolm Turnbull. Malcolm is a man of conviction and I thank him for his service as leader.

“Joe Hockey should also be applauded for being willing to put his hand up.

“Joe is a great asset to the Liberal Party and I’m sure he will continue to play an important role in taking up the fight to Labor,” Senator Barnett concluded.
